URDI expresses its deep concern regarding the public statements made by the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Noël Barrot, calling for the resignation of Ms. Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967. These statements constitute a serious breach of the fundamental principle of independence of UN mechanisms and raise concerns regarding the dissemination of manifestly inaccurate information by public authorities. As a result, JURDI has today filed a report with the Public Prosecutor of Paris concerning facts that may amount to the criminal offence provided for under French law relating to the dissemination of false information, in light of the fraudulent attribution of statements to Ms. Francesca Albanese.
